Hello Everyone,

**Reminder tomorrow is Photo Retakes Day!

This morning we had a class discussion around things we can control and what we can't control. Some of the ideas we discussed were: Things we can control - Being kind, asking for help, working hard, how to respond to challenges, forgiving, and what you say or do. Things we can't control - other people, the past, height, weather, who likes me, bullying, skin color, and what others think about me.

In gym we learned a new game using "Rock, Paper, Scissors." The students loved it so please ask me how you play!

Ms. Russell gave us all a "How am I doing?" target today. We then looked through our writing books and chose what we felt was our "best work" so far. We looked for things like: is it complete, is it neat, do I have capitals and punctuation, is there a colored picture, and do I have my title and date. When we selected one Ms. Russell stapled our target to it and we decided if it was Red, Yellow or Green - "I need to keep going..." "I'm almost there..." or "I made it!"

After lunch Ms. Russell read some more of "A Long Walk to Water." We discussed some of the things that happened in the chapters and then wrote a reader's response.

In science we learned more about the "Outer Ear" today including the "Pinna" and the "Ear Canal."

We had a movement break outside and then Ms. Russell read "This is How We Do It" by Matt Lamothe. The book tells the story of seven different children's days from around the world.

Have a great afternoon,

Ms. Russell

Good Afternoon,

**Reminder Parent/Teacher Conferences are this week!!

This morning we talked about the different types of sentences: Command, Statement, Question, and Exclamation. A command tells someone what to do. A statement states a fact. A question is asking someone something and an exclamation is expressing an opinion with emotion. We practiced writing a few of our own.

We had a practice for the assembly this morning and did a fantastic job for the actual assembly! Ms. Russell was very proud!

In math we had another number talk. Ms. Russell read us the book, "A Hundred Billion Trillion Stars" by Seth Fishman. We learned about approximately how many trees cover our Earth (three trillion), how much water too (three hundred seventy billion gallons). We learned that seven billion five hundred million humans weigh about the same as ten quadrillion ants. We also learned that there are about 1,620 trillion raindrops in an average thunderstorm and the average person walks something like 100,000 miles in their lifetime, or five times around the world! Wow!

Ms. Russell read more of "The Hobbit" after lunch.

In gym we played "running chaser" and "floor-hockey."

For science today we looked at a cross section model of the Human ear. Then Ms. Russell taught us some fun facts. Did you know that ears help keep you balanced?

We finished our day with another chapter from "A Long Walk to Water." Please ask me what happened to Nya and Salva.

Have a great afternoon!

Or "What do we have a million of in this school?" Then we talked about just how far a million of something could go. What surprised kids the most was just how long it would take to count from one to one million, which is 23 days without eating or sleeping!!

In gym we played some floor hockey games. We are working on passing to our teammates and stick handling.

In the afternoon Ms. Russell taught us how to get on Google Docs and we did a social studies activity where answered questions about what a typical day looks like for us. For example, the time I wake up, what I have for breakfast, how I get to school, and what activities I do in the evening. Next, we will be long at a typical day for a child in another country to compare.
